WHY RHEINLAND

At Shell, we’re reimagining how to power the world. Halfway between Cologne and Bonn, Germany is REC, a net zero emissions campus adjacent to the first of our legacy refineries to be converted to Energy & Chemicals Park Rheinland. Redefining how energy and chemicals are produced in the Park and what a sustainable workplace can be, the Campus will boast collaborative, versatile, and inviting spaces, with Shell as an anchor tenant. REC will help enable innovations to bring forth a future where socially responsible technologies, energies, and innovations are elemental.

Be part of the revolution for a cleaner tomorrow.

Green Urban Platform

The Rheinland region has long played a role in Germany’s fuels and chemicals production. The Shell Energy & Chemicals Park Rheinland will serve as a catalyst for the regional transformation from Industrial Center to Green Energy Hub, including “green” and future-proof industrial jobs. Located 15km from Cologne and 16km from Bonn, Wesseling is in the heart of the region that has a population of four million and is home to 30 universities and research institutions, over 20% of all companies in Germany, and 19% of all start-ups. This has created a region with healthy economic activity responsible for 21% of Germany's total GDP.

Investment Opportunity

The REC campus includes 27.3 hectares zoned for commercial office development and 16 hectares for trade and industrial. Based on the City of Wesseling zoning requirements the carrying capacity for the site is comprised of 139,000sm of office and support amenities and 40,000sm of warehouse and workshop space. The vision for REC is aligned with the Wesseling 2040 plan. REC is connected to the community and wider region via A555 and Tram Line 16 with station Wesseling Sud located across from the campus entrance.

Synergisitc Adjacencies

Europe is driving global growth in energy transition investment. In 2021, Europe invested $219 billion in the energy transition, including $47 billion in Germany. Germany has an ambitious climate change target to reach climate neutrality by 2045 and wants to position itself at the forefront of global sustainable development with initiatives such as the Sustainable Finance Strategy launched in 2021. To achieve its targets, the roll-out of renewable energies is critical.

Green Path Forward

The goal of Shell is to be able to meet the increasing demand of our customers for chemical products as well as CO2-free or low- CO2 energy – from green electricity to H2 to organic and recycled products – and thus to put customer demand for sustainable products even more at the center of Shell’s business. Energy & Chemicals Park Rheinland and the neighboring REC campus play a decisive role in this positioning.
